The short version

What stays on your phone

Everything a Howarth Games app records is kept in its own storage on your device and is never uploaded: your dogs and horses and their records, your vehicles and their documents, the drivers and their licences, your walks, rides and trips and the routes they took, your recordings and videos, your dictations and the text made from them, your timetable, your photographs and your notes. Deleting the app deletes all of it. We have no copy and no way to obtain one, which also means we cannot recover it for you.

What leaves the app, and the only things it is used for

Four things can be sent to our own server. Each is used for subscriptions and push notifications, and nothing else — that is not a summary of a longer list, it is the whole list of what can be linked to you. The one other thing an app can send is not about you at all, and is described below: only in Car Portfolio, and only if you turn Fuel price share on, the forecourt fuel prices you add.

And for all four:

Push notifications are optional. Turn them off in the app’s settings and our server marks your phone as off and sends nothing more to it — or turn them off for the app in the phone’s own Settings. With notifications off, the device ID is used only for your subscription.

Reminders are not push notifications. The reminders you can switch on in the apps — a planned walk or ride, a birthday, something coming due, a drink on a long walk, a daily reminder to record, a reminder set on a recording’s notes — are scheduled by the phone itself, from what is already stored on it. Nothing is sent to us or anybody else to set one up, and no device ID is involved. Every one is off until you switch it on.

Giving your email address is a choice, not a condition of use. Decline and the parts that need a subscription may not be available; everything else carries on, and nothing on the device is lost either way. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google — we never see your card details, billing address, or the Apple or Google Account you pay with.

What the phone is asked for, and why

These are the permissions any of this software may ask for. Each is requested at the moment the feature that needs it is first used, so which prompts you actually see depends on the app and on what you do with it.

Refusing one costs you that feature and nothing else, and you can change your mind at any time in the phone’s own Settings. Nothing here asks for your contacts, calendar, reminders, health data, Bluetooth or the local network. Nothing captured through any of these permissions is ever uploaded to us — not a photograph, not a video, not a recording, not a dictation, and never your exact position. Speech you dictate leaves the phone only to the phone’s own speech service (Apple’s, or on Android usually Google’s), and only where the phone cannot recognise it itself, as described above. A position leaves the phone in only two ways, both described below: the address and postcode lookups you ask for — on the compass in Peaks and Paths, Dog Walker and Horse Rider, and on Car Portfolio’s breakdown and fuel price screens — which go to the phone’s maps service, Apple’s on an iPhone, Google’s on Android, and not to us; and, only if you turn Fuel price share on in Car Portfolio, the position of a station whose prices you add, and a rough area, about 1 km across, when you ask for prices near you.

Fuel price share (Car Portfolio only). This is an opt-in feature: it is off, and not on the app’s dashboard, until you turn it on in the app’s Settings, and turning it on is a requirement for using it at all. The app says what is shared before you turn it on. While it is off, nothing about fuel prices leaves the phone. Turned on:

A few things worth saying about particular apps

No analytics, no adverts, no third parties

There is no analytics on the website or in the app — not Google’s, not anybody’s. Nothing counts which pages you visit, which screens you open, how long you stay or roughly where you are. The cost of that is worth stating: we do not know how many people use any of this, or which features matter. We would rather not know than have you measured for it.

There are no adverts, no advertising network, no crash reporter, no social media integration and no third-party sign-in. The only other parties involved at all are Apple and Google, who take the payment for a subscription bought through their store and tell the app and our server whether one is active.

First aid and reference information

The first aid libraries in these apps are reference, not advice, and not a substitute for calling 999 or a vet. Physio Student and Kinesiology are study aids and not clinical tools — neither is a medical device, neither diagnoses anything, and neither replaces your university’s teaching, your practice educator or your own judgement. Nothing in either should be used to decide a real patient’s care.

The website

This website sets no cookies at all and collects nothing. You are not asked to create an account, and no name, address, phone number, payment detail or message is stored.

How long it is kept, and your rights

Your email address and user ID are kept while you use the app or have a subscription, and removed whenever you ask.

They are also deleted automatically if they go unused. If the app has not been opened while signed in with your address for twelve months, and no subscription is running on it, our system deletes it — you do not have to ask, and nobody has to remember. Both have to be true: someone who opens the app is never deleted for not paying, and a subscription that is still running is never deleted for going quiet.

Two weeks before that happens we email you to say so. Opening the app in those two weeks cancels it and starts the twelve months again; doing nothing lets it go. What is deleted is your email address, your user ID and your sign-in sessions. Nothing on your phone is touched, and if you come back later you can sign in again with the same address.

Your device ID is kept while the app is registered for notifications on that phone. Your purchase history is the store’s record of what you bought, and is kept as the record of your subscription; once your address has been deleted it is no longer linked to you.

You may ask what we hold — the four things above — and ask for any of it to be corrected or deleted at any time. If you have never given us your email address, the most we hold is the device ID, and only if you allowed notifications. Everything on your phone is kept until you delete it or the app.

Children

Nothing here knowingly collects information from children. A subscription is bought through an Apple or Google Account, and nothing is collected beyond the four things above.

Changes to this notice

If what the app does with your information changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top will say when. If a future version ever describes collecting more than the four things above, it will say so plainly rather than quietly.

Who is responsible, and how to reach us

These apps and this website are made by Howarth Games — one person writing software, which is why the answers above are as short as they are. Questions about this notice, or a request to delete your email address: martin@howarthgames.co.uk.
